ExxonMobil/Esso

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM?

Exxon is responsible for the fact that Bush did not sign the Kyto-treaty, Exxon is also a big donor of the Republican Party. This company is also responsible for a part of the CO2-polution.

Name: ExxonMobile

Chairman and CEO: Lee R. Raymond

Postal address: 25 East John W Carpenter Freeway Irving TX75062-2298 USA

Phone number: not known

Fax number: not known

Website: http://www.exxonmobil.com/corporate/

Email address: postmaster@exxon.com

Important date(s): In 2001, the President of the United States Council for International Business(USCIB), from which ExxonMobile is a member, did write a letter to President Bush in which he asked US Government for the withdrawal of Kyoto.

Activities: exploration and production of oil and gas to the manufacturing and marketing of fuels, lubes and chemicals.

Bush donor: ExxonMobile is one of the sponsors of Bush. They are sending millions every year to Bush Jr. From 2000 till now, ExxonMobile have given US$2.800.000 to the Republican Party (figure calculated on 29th October 2004, source: www.opensecrets.org

Supporting brutal / repressive regimes: Involved in oil production in Malaysia, Chile, Indonesia, Colombia, and elsewhere.

Damaging the environment: In March 1989 the Exxon Valdez supertanker ran aground and broke open, releasing 11 million gallons of crude oil into the Prince William Sound, Alaska. The US National Transportation Safety Board, investigating the causes of the spill, partly blamed the "higher-ups"at the Exxon Shipping Company for poor management. It also criticised the Alaska pipeline consortium, of which Exxon is a partner, for it's 'massive failure' in reposonse to the spill, which greatly contributed to its severity.

Five reasons to hate ExxonMobile:
1. Esso/ExxonMobil tries to convince the public that global warming isn't happening even though Esso/ExxonMobil is one of its main causes. It spends millions of dollars on misleading propaganda every year.
2. Esso/ExxonMobil has played a leading role in sabotaging international attempts to stop global warming. It would rather sell more petrol than protect future generations.
3. Esso/ExxonMobil doesn't believe renewable energy has a future. "With no readily available economic alternatives on the horizon, fossil fuels will continue to supply most of the world's energy needs for the foreseeable future." --Lee Raymond, ExxonMobil CEO, 1997
4. Esso/ExxonMobil is the biggest oil company in the world - its profits totalled more than US$12 billion in 2000. If anyone can afford to help stop global warming it's Esso/ExxonMobil.
5. Esso/ExxonMobil was one of the main financial contributors to George Bush's election campaign. As soon as George Bush became president, he announced that the US would pull out of international agreements to stop global warming - exactly the position that Esso/ExxonMobil was promoting. http://www.stopesso.org/background?text_id=whyesso

ExxonMobil and the pro-war lobby groups:

ExxonMobil has a record of funding right-wing industry front groups who lobby on their behalf to 'protect US business' and keep the US addicted to oil. It is no coincidence that many of these groups have an analysis of foreign policy that leads them to lobby for an attack on Iraq.

the American Enterprise Institute - a 'think tank' to whom ExxonMobil donated $230,000 in 2001.

Another pro-war front group funded by ExxonMobil is the Heritage Foundation, who received $65,000 from ExxonMobil in 2001.

The Centre for Strategic and International Studies received $135,000 in ExxonMobil funding in 2001.

In 2001 ExxonMobil also gave $20,000 to the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy. http://www.stopesso.com/pdf/tigerinthetanks.pdf

PHILIP MORRIS, KRAFT

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM?

Altria is the new name for tobacco and food giants Phillip Morris and Kraft foods. Wherever they work, Altria has demonstrated irresponsibility and lack of concern for public health, human rights and the global environment.

Name: Altria (Philip Morris, Kraft Foods)

Postal address: Altria Corporate Services, Inc., 120 Park
Avenue, 19th fl., New York, NY 10017, USA

Fax number: +1-917-663-5544

Website: http://www.altria.com/

Important date(s): Philip Morris acquired General Foods in 1985 and Kraft Foods in 1988. In April 2002, Philip Morris changed it's name into Altria, a corporate umbrella, this to have a distance from the controversy surrounding the tobacco industry.

Activities: Philip Morris produces seven of the top 20 best-selling international brands, including Marlboro, the world's top-selling cigarette brand, Lark, Chesterfield and L&M. Kraft Foods is the second-largest branded food and beverage company worldwide. It sells its products in more than 150 countries.

Bush donor: Altria is one of the top ten sponsors of Bush Jr. From 2000 till now, Altria has given 6.860.000 $US to the Republican Party (figure calculated on 29th October 2004, source: www.opensecrets.org).

Lobbying against the FCTC: Philip Morris uses every resource at its disposal to block or weaken the World Health Organization's proposed Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), who establishes an important precendent for international regulation of corporations that profit at the expense of our health, our environment and human rights such as the agribusiness, oil, pharmaceuticals, water and weapons industries.

Killing people: In high-income countries, 15.000 youth become addicted to tobacco every day, 84.000 in middle- and low-income countries. Tobacco is responsible for one death every ten seconds worldwide, killing nearly 5 million people every year. If current trends continue, tobacco will become the world's leading cause of death by 2030.

Aggravating world famine: The fertile land appropriated for the production of tobacco is enough to feed millions of people worldwide.

Chemical pollution: Tobacco growing can deplete the soil in 2 years and requires the heavy use of dangerous chemicals which contaminate our environment and put tobacco farmers at risk.

Exploiting child workers: The use of child labourers in tobacco production is widespread in major tobacco producing countries. Children are directly exposed to a cocktail of highly toxic agro-chemicals.

Deforestation: Tobacco is a major cause of deforestation. Worldwide, between 1.2 and 5.5 million ha. of forest - one in eight trees cut down in the world - is due to tobacco growing or curing. Clearing forests for tobacco production causes soil erosion and related ecological damage. Curing, - or drying out - by burning wood the harvested tobacco leaves from their natural green to the brownish colour seen in cigarettes, uses huge amounts of wood fuel, especially timber -- trees which could be used for cooking and heating by local peoples.

It is important to expose the unethical practices of specific companies as their behaviour is often indicative of the entire system.

Press Cutting: Pepsi returns to Iraq after 13 years
By Cecile Feuillatre in Baghdad

BAGHDAD Soft Drinks chief executive officer Hamid Jassim Khamis has returned from New York and he is fizzing with excitement. After 13 years of UN sanctions his firm is back in the PepsiCo fold.

The US soft drinks giant signed a franchise agreement last week with Baghdad Soft Drinks, Iraq's leading producer, authorising it to produce and distribute Pepsi, Seven-Up and Mirinda in central Iraq. Baghdad Soft Drinks Company first became a Pepsi franchisee in 1984. However that relationship ended in 1990 when PepsiCo had to pull out of Iraq after the invasion of Kuwait and the imposition of international trade sanctions on Saddam Hussein's regime.

McDonalds

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM?

Behind the smiling face of Ronald McDonald lies the reality - McDonald's only interest is money, making profits from whoever and whatever they can, demonstrating irresponsibility and lack of concern for public health, human and animal rights, and the global environment.

Name: McDonald's

Chairman and CEO: Jim Skinner

Postal address: McDonald's Corporation, One McDonald's Plaza, Oak Brook, IL 60521, USA.

Telephone: +1 (708) 575-3000

Website: http://www.mcdonalds.com/

Email address: postmaster@mcd.com

Important date(s): McDonald's Corporation, founded in 1955, opened its first restaurants outside of the USA in 1967. In 1993, McDonald's and Texaco opened a restaurant, convenience store and fueling facilities on a single site for the the busy consumer. In 1996, McDonald's and Disney announced a deal giving McDonald's exclusive rights to use characters from Disney films in its promotions around the world for 10 years.

Activities: McDonald's now has over 30.000 stores in 119 countries. The company claims it serves 47 million people a day and that a new store opens somewhere in the world every seven hours.

Bush donor: From 2000 till now, McDonald's has given 790.000 $US to the Republican Party (figure calculated on 29th October 2004, source: www.opensecrets.org).

Promoting unhealthy food: McDonald's spend over two billion dollars each year on advertising its junk food - high in fat, sugar and salt, and low in fibre and vitamins. A diet of this type is linked with a greater risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Their food also contains many chemical additives, some of which may cause ill-health, and hyperactivity in children.

Murdering animals: The menus of McDonald's are based on the torture and murder of millions of animals. Most are intensively farmed, with no access to fresh air and sunshine, and no freedom of movement. Their deaths are barbaric. We have the choice to eat meat or not, but the billions of animals massacred for food each year have no choice at all.

Aggravating the world famine: McDonald's continually promote meat products, encouraging people to eat meat more often, which wastes more and more food resources. Vast areas of land in poor countries are used for cash crops or for cattle ranching, or to grow grain to feed animals to be eaten in the West. This is at the expense of local food needs.

Damaging the environment: McDonald's use beef reared on ex-rainforest land - vital for life- preventing its regeneration and forcing local people to move on to other areas and cut down further trees. Every year McDonald's use thousands of tons of unnecessary packaging, most of which ends up littering our streets or polluting the land buried in landfill sites.

Exploiting workers: McDonald's have always been opposed to Unions and exploit its more than one million mostly young employees around the world making them work harder and faster in poor safety conditions and paying them with low wages to keep profits high and wage costs low. Innovations to increase the workers' speed constantly are installed. Computerised machinery regulates the pace of work at each station to the precise second: each customer should be served within 180 seconds...
