Stop Bush! Press Releases
Press Release and invitation (17/2/2005)
88 social movement organisations support demonstrations against the policies of the US
At least 88 environmental, human rights, peace and youth organisations have joined the platform "Stop Bush!" that is calling for protest demonstrations on 21st and 22nd February to mark the visit of US President George W. Bush to Belgium.
In a platform text, the organisations express their "concern about the negative role that the United States is playing within the international community in several areas, including the environment, human rights, peace, and aid to developing countries."
A number of Belgian political parties have also expressed their support for the platform. They include SP.a, Spirit, Groen!, PS, Ecolo, KP, PC and PvdA.
The members of the platform are also pleased that also elsewhere in the country actions are planned, and that the cultural and academic is also making a stand, for example with the initiative of the Brussells Tribunal (www.brusselstribunal.org) on Sunday 20th February.
You are invited to be present on Monday 21st February, from 5:30pm, to follow a protest demonstration opposite the US Embassy. Between 6:00pm and 6:30pm, four speakers (two from each language community) will represent the views of the platform. The press spokespeople will be available at the corner of Guimardstraat and Kunstlaan staan de verantwoordelijken (easily recognisable by the large "fire engine" covered in banners). For more information about the action, visit the website: www.bushwanted.org.
On Tuesday 22nd February, a second demonstration will take place from 3:00pm, in the Wetstraat between the Jubelpark and Schumanplein. George Bush is expected to arrive at 5:15pm, for his visit to the European Union institutions.
