Nuclear phase-out at For Mother Earth with 100% green electricity

Starting July 1st the local Ecological Centre (GEC), which is housing the For Mother Earth office in Gent, is provided with 100% renewable electricity. With the liberalisation of the electricity-market in Flanders, GEC choose for prompt action and for Ecopower, a new partner which owns a
water- and windmills. The co-op excluded Electrabel, the main electricity provider which owns Belgium's 7 nuclear reactors.

From Tuesday the July 1st the producer of renewable energy Ecopower was welcomed as the homesupplier of the GEC. The centre is housing amongst others an organic restaurant, an Oxfam Fair Tradeshop and the office of a local environmental group. Ecopower will in a first phase deliver its green electricity exclusively to its shareholders and co-owners.

An FME spokesperson declared "When we demonstrated ten years ago before the gates of the nuclear powerplant near Antwerp this seemed a very far dream. It is an enormous relief to be provided with renewable and non-polluting sources as wind and water. Ecopower shows us concrete way out of these polluting energy sources. However today we still have to stress that energy efficiency are the main priorities."

In the ecological centre consumers can find free advise about energysaving and sustainable living in a new "Environmental Advise Shop". This while companies and local and regional governments are dispatched to "Cenergie", another green company homed in the centre and also specialized in energy conservation.

The centre stimulates the symbiosis between different ecologic projects with the purpose to create an sustainable development to safeguard the earth for future generations.
