Alternatieve V.S.-presidentsverkiezingen voor niet-V.S burgers.

Luik - Brussel - Gent, 28 oktober 2004 - Niet alleen de V.S. bereiden zich voor op de historische presidentsverkiezingen voor volgende week dinsdag. Voor niet VS-burgers komen er alternatieve verkiezingen met echte stemhokjes in o.a. België, Brazilië, Engeland, Hongarije, Kirgizië en Spanje. Hiermee wil een internationaal netwerk van sociale, ecologische en vredesgroepen niet VS-burgers de kans bieden te participeren aan deze historische dag. De campagne wordt gecoördineerd door Voor Moeder Aarde vzw, en wordt onderschreven door 141 groepen en organisaties uit 39 landen. Het stembiljet staat ook on-line www.boycottbush.org
Aan de universiteit in Luik kiezen studenten reeds vandaag en morgen.

Volgende week dinsdag zullen in Gent aan de Korenmarkt en in Brussel aan de Muntschouwburg stemhokjes verschijnen. Met een tweekoppig 'corporate monster' met de gezichten van Bush en Kerry zal men aan passanten duidelijk maken wie in werkelijkheid in de V.S. en in de wereld de touwtjes in handen heeft. In België roepen o.a. AYNI, Jeugdbond voor Natuurstudie en Milieubescherming, KWIA, Milieu Actie Front, Mouvement Chrétien pour la Paix, Rencontres pour la Paix, Voor Moeder Aarde en Vrede vzw mensen op om niet gelaten toe te kijken maar zelf deel te nemen aan de verkiezingen door bewust producten van een aantal multinationals (o.a. Esso, Texaco, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Kraft/Philip Morris en Mc Donalds) links te laten liggen. Vandaag en morgen worden reeds verkiezingen georganiseerd door de studentenvereniging aan de universiteit van Luik. "Deze middag hebben reeds honderd mensen gestemd. Bush en Kerry halen tot nog toe slechts één stem. Het is duidelijk dat we een ander VS beleid zouden krijgen mochten de miljarden andere wereldburgers een stem krijgen." verklaarde Caroline Lebeau zonet vanuit de universiteit van Luik.

"Als niet V.S. burgers kunnen we inderdaad niet stemmen, hoewel deze verkiezingen een sterke invloed hebben op ons dagelijks leven" verklaart Pol D'Huyvetter, campagnevoerder van Voor Moeder Aarde in België "Met deze alternatieve V.S. verkiezingen willen we trouwens ook niet kiezen tussen G.W. Bush of John Kerry, ook wel bekend als Mr. Bush Light. Zijn buitenlands programma blijkt ook nauwelijks te verschillen met dat van Bush" zegt D'Huyvetter. "Het VS unilateralisme is te ernstig en we kunnen toch niet gelaten toekijken? De mensen buiten de V.S. kunnen via deze verkiezingen stemmen voor het einde van de bezetting van Irak door de V.S., voor het Kyoto protocol, voor de ontwapening van meer dan 10.000 Amerikaanse kernwapens, en voor het einde van de Amerikaanse steun aan Israël. En ze kunnen dit alle dagen opnieuw herhalen via een boycot van een aantal Amerikaanse producten. "

Of het nu Bush of Kerry is die verkozen wordt op 2 november, de multinationale ondernemingen van de V.S. en het buitenlandse beleid van Verenigde Staten zullen oorlogen blijven steunen, het milieu vernietigen en mensenrechten schenden. Om deze reden roept het internationaal netwerk op om de boycotcampagne ook na de presidentiële verkiezingen van de V.S. aan te houden. De top 6 van te boycotten multinationale ondernemingen uit de V.S. zijn allen grote donors van Bush sinds 1999.

De donors van Bush

In januari 2004 kwamen de campagnevoerders van het internationaal Boycot netwerk samen tijdens het Wereld Sociaal Forum, in Mumbai, India. Zij beslisten 6 multinationale ondernemingen van de V.S. te viseren die de belangrijkste donors zijn van Bush en wereldwijd gekend zijn. Dit maakt het gemakkelijk om hen overal ter wereld te boycotten.

University of Liège
The administration of the University of Liège has given its permission for the Federation of Students to organize an alternative polling station within the university for the US Presidential Elections. The university will print the posters to advert the alternative elections and flyers to inform students about the international treaties, i.e. the Kyoto Protocol, that the current US administration refuse to sign or ratify. The alternative elections take place on Thursday October 28 and Friday October 29 to allow students to vote before their holidays.

"Eleições dos Estados Unidos por Outro Mundo" or US Elections for Another World will be held in Curitiba an action held by a group of students Unions. Boycotts are not very common in Brazil. Everyone drinks Coca Cola and very few abandoned McDonald's. This is a good moment to start a boycott campaign as the public opinion is engaged against the occupation in Iraq. The students have already prepared a list of the products to boycott and the substitutes, to email friends, and they hope with this action to disseminate the list - and the idea. They decided to include Unilever in the list of the boycott targets, as they own 30 of the most important brands we find in the markets. They have, as well, fired the actress Whoopi Goldberg for speaking against Bush, and have a history on animals mistreatment for cosmetic research.

The Hungarian Left Front www.baloldalifront.hu/ prepares alternative polling stations from 29th October to 2nd November, at the different points of Budapest: at the exit of the tube stations at the place of the East and West train stations, where a lot of people moving on this way every day. 2 millions people are living in Budapest.

In Córdoba, the Green Party plan to do a street action on the 2nd November with the ballot papers for the alternative US elections for non-US citizens with other political parties and organizations. They want to take the opportunity to be on the street with the message of the Boycott Bush campaign who ask the US government to comply with the international treaties.

The Fair Trade NGO Finestra al Sud www.finestralsud.org, based in Inca, Mallorca, will hold alternative US elections on Saturday, 30th October, in a street party where they will celebrate our 5th anniversary. Everybody will be able to vote in the afternoon and in the evening, then they will count votes and announce the results at the end of the party.
