My money. Clear conscience?
This campaign is demanding clarity about what exactly the financial players (banks, insurance companies, pension funds, …) do with their customers money.
Where is this money invested? What gets financed with it? The customer has a right to information about these issues and has the right to protest against any investments that s/he doesn’t agree with.
Financial institutions play a very important role in our economy. They invest in economic activities. They control which initiatives gain financial support and which don’t. They control the flow of money.
An overview of the world economy clearly shows where money is made available and where it isn’t.
You’ve never heard the weapon industry complaining of a money shortage. The oil industry has never had a shortage of financial backers. But the big financial institutions don’t seem to be interested in small scale alternative energy projects such as wind or solar energy.
It is time that financiers start taking their social responsibility seriously. Sustainable development should be part of their overall aims. It has to go beyond nice words. We expect societal returns, a financing policy that aims to create a sustainable society and not simply further the financial gains of the institution.
